COVER | free before midnight, $20 after midnight
Darker Than Wax presents a series of nights featuring acts from all over the region. We’ll be spotlighting the best talents, producers and collectives from Thailand to Indonesia to Vietnam to Japan and more.
For this second instalment, we are tying up with Shanghai’s up-and-coming label Eating Music, who will be sending its selectors Endy Chen and Knopha from the mainland to our tropical shores.
Playing alongside them will be DTW’s head honcho Funk Bast*rd, who has cemented himself as one of the go-to selectors in the region, and this night is set to be another sonic excursion.
KNOPHA (Eating Music)
Hot off his Shanghai Boiler Room set, Noah Li aka Knopha is arguably one of China’s best kept secrets. His unique blend of house, techno and ambient music has allowed him to carve a rather special niche for himself, and has released a few quality EPs under his belt. Most recently, through his own take on 90s oriental ambient music, Knopha is slowly drawing attention within and outside of China. He is paving his own way through the unknown world where dance, ambient music and alien soundscape co-exist.
The surprisingly well-received EP ‘Nothing Nil’ that was released via Shanghai based label Eating Music, instead of the deep house groove he was previously known for, Noah presented an enigmatic fourth world 3-tracker built on 90s inspired sound palette. The record was supported by Chee Shimizu, PLO Man, AZ (Revelation Time, Osaka), Julian Horn (Edition Hawara, Vienna) and etc.
Besides being a producer and DJ, Noah is also a party promoter with goals to connect China with the underground worldwide. He co-founded club night Beatween, which has hosted revere selectors including Orpheu The Wizard, Pender Street Steppers, Bake, Bell Towers and etc. He also co-produces a podcast show Beatween Radio, a platform to share a wide range of music with guests.
ENDY CHEN (Eating Music, Groove Bunny, NTS)
A renowned vinyl collector, Endy Chen has been in the music game for many years, and is a huge collector of 70s Asian grooves. He has shared the stage with many great artists like Eric Lau, DJ mitsu the beats, DJ Muro, Cro-Magnon, AZ, Lipelis, Chee Shimizu, Airbear, Munir and many more. He has also headlined some of Shanghai’s coolest parties such as “WOOOZY OFFLINE: VINYL SPECIAL”, and is a regular contributor to NTS Radio, NOISEY, RBMA Radio and Meat & Bone in Shanghai. A man who wears many hats, evidently.
In 2013, Endy founded his own record label, Groove Bunny Records, and has released numerous local Chinese artists on CD/cassette and vinyl, selling the records to many countries. In 2014, he co-founded record store Daily Vinyl in Shanghai with DJ ollo-MAM and began to work with some of the finest indie-record labels in the world. Soon enough, DV became one of the most important record spots in China.
Funk Bast*rd (Cosa Nostra, Darker Than Wax)
One half of the Cosa Nostra duo and co-founder of the prolific net label Darker Than Wax, the Funk Bast*rd has been tirelessly pushing and promoting an alternative expression of left-field music through his widely eclectic, genre-bending sets. It is no surprise when one hears his musical selection which traverses between a huge variety of musical genres, be it deep jazz, soul, funk, boogie, Brazilian grooves, house, hip hop, bass and the most forward sounding beats.
His unique sets have taken him around cities like Tokyo, Paris, London, Switzerland, Saigon and Jakarta, and has played alongside the likes of Dam Funk, Pearson Sound, Iron Curtis, Jamie XX, Mike Huckaby, Joakim, Arttu, just to name a few. His unique flow has earned him praises from selectors like Dam Funk, Recloose. Tama Sumo and Jamie XX just to name a few. Most recently, he was invited up to play at Club Shelter in Shanghai, as part of a Darker Than Wax & SVBKVLT collaborative party.
On the festival side, the credentials run high too, as he was one of the few locally chosen selectors to have played in Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival in Singapore. His Cosa Nostra project has equally been impressive, with their tracks charted on 22tracks Belgium, various radio shows and online platforms. Now with the label in place boasting of 22 global artists, things look set to evolve even bigger.
The Funk Bast*rd always has something in the box that surprises. Just open dem ears.
